Recent Bicycle Tour Serves as Reminder of Best Safety Practices

On Behalf of | Aug 25, 2015 | Firm News

Beginning August 13, approximately 275 cyclists covered over 240 miles in the Bicycling Around Minnesota (BAM) Tour. The tour ended on August 16 and began and ended in Brainerd. The riders spent their evenings in various cities throughout Minnesota, including Pine River, Crosby, and Little Falls.

The route for this tour included more than just bike paths. Cyclists shared the highways and local roads with motorists, increasing the need for caution and traffic safety over the four-day span. It is important to note that state law places the responsibility of safety on both bicyclists and motorists. Accidents can occur with almost no warning, so exercising additional caution is always advised.

Keeping the Roads Safe for Bicyclists

While the Bicycling Around Minnesota Tour is now past, the need for safety on our roadways remains active. Attorney Robert Roe is an avid cyclist and enjoys spending his free time taking in the great outdoors on his bike. This passion for biking also extends to Attorney Roe’s legal practice, as he frequently represents those who have been injured in bicycle accidents.

Attorney Roe encourages bicyclists to follow these traffic rules to enhance roadway safety:

  • Ride in the same direction as traffic
  • Obey all traffic signals
  • Signal turns and ride predictably
  • Use a headlight and rear reflectors when it is dark
  • Wear helmets and bright reflective gear

Similarly, motorists are also expected to follow certain rules when interacting with cyclists. Drivers must maintain a three-foot clearance when passing a cyclist and motorists and cyclists must yield the right of way to each other at all times.

Unfortunately, many motorists fail to abide by the rules of the road and cyclists can suffer immensely as a result. Accidents can result in broken bones, brain damage, and an inability to continue working. If you were injured in a cyclist accident, you may be entitled to compensation and Attorney Roe can help.
